Andrew Rankin is a conceptual artist from Auckland, New Zealand. Predominantly working with image and form, utilizing photography and sculptural materials.

Artist statement;

For this show I wanted to respond to the space, one artwork directly does this and the other works fit into an ongoing series. Public Record’s aesthetic richness and focus drew me in and I wanted to acknowledge that. I created several concepts that worked with different images taken inside the shop, but in the end I decided to work with a photo that captured the entranceway, the beautiful vintage tiles and an iconic Ponsonby figure reflecting in the doorway. My work often makes use of shadows and reflections so this image seemed fitting.

I situate the current position of my practice somewhere between conceptual photography and sculpture. An illusionistic space is automatic in photography, I like to further enhance this illusion through subtle manipulations of presentation. The relationship between frame and image is ever present in my practice.

Consideration is given to the semblance of form and image in the construction of the sculptural frames, enriching the reading of the image as a reproduction. This process also brings the medium further toward object. When we see an image or an object, we see more than just what is visually in front of us. Our brains are trained to fill in the blanks, to assume that the object has form and that we know what it would look like on the sides and the aspects we cannot see.
