Kathy is a painter and a dedicated abstractionist represented by galleries in Auckland and Christchurch.

She has always aspired to express an inner tension a thought process rather than an impetuous action. As a painter, her mark making is gestural in broad and fine brushstrokes receptive cursive ramblings wearing through layers of paint.

Artist statement:

I look to my memories and experiences as a starting points for my paintings. The time I have spent in Japan has influenced my practise. A country of contrasts - a sensory overload of chaos and calm.

The repetitive and meditative nature of my work is of comfort to me. This same approach is what I love about working with wire. My initial project was taking a remembrance rock and weaving around it and in doing so making the ordinary un-ordinary.

Unknowingly I had stumbled upon Kanaami - a centuries old Japanese craft of weaving with wire. I am inspired to create beautiful copper pieces to enjoy in our daily lives. Embracing the imperfect and taking pleasure in the understated.

Kanaami x Rock from Wanaka

Originating in Kyoto, Japan, Kanaami wire weaving is an art form traditionally used to create kitchenware. New Zealand artist Kathy Barber applies this technique to her art pieces. This craft is balances a steady hand, eye for pattern and lots of patience. The thin lines create intricate webs which strike an interesting balance between the ethereal and the sturdy.
