Craig Spencer is a New Zealand-born ceramicist who discovered his passion for pottery in 2018 after relocating to Currumbin on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Previously an accomplished interior designer based in Sydney, he fell in love with ceramics after being introduced to a four-week workshop. “Following that, I never turned back,” he says.
Craig’s approach combines wheel-thrown works with slab building techniques to create chic, streamlined pieces, with clients including Aesop among private collectors. The collection created for Public Record reflects Craig’s style of simple architectural lines and details with a nod to Japanese minimalism, resulting in beautiful yet functional forms-spotlighting locally sourced NZ clay.
“It has been lovely to share my new craft back in my home country after spending the last 25 years working and living overseas,” Craig says. “I’m loving being surrounded by such a uniquely curated collection of artists at Public Record.”
Marking a continuation of his journey in the world of ceramics, Craig plans to continue working on collections for Public Record throughout the year, sharing his time between New Zealand and Byron Bay.
