This is a continuation of Hoffman’s Raw Earth Series that focuses on a special Japanese style Shigaraki clay. The clay itself has heavy grog, Helmer kaolin, heavy sand and inclusions. All undergo layers of natural-colored slips which helps create a unique texture and appearance. These pieces are all high fired at 2285 degrees, and most fired multiple times.
About the Artist
Justin Hoffman (b.1974) is an American ceramic artist and painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His work constantly shifts between sculpture, vessel, and three-dimensional objects, and is heavily influenced by the ceramic artists in Japan. Each piece is made by hand, each form is created almost in the moment and in most cases, is one of a kind. Hoffman approaches each piece as he would a blank canvas, ensuring layers of depth and texture. He currently works out of his private studio in Lafayette, CA.
