Rewarded an Excellence Award from the Kasama Ceramic institute in 2021, Namika has gained a strong reputation amongst the art community in Japan, exhibiting in many solo and group shows throughout the country and recent one is in Switzerland.
Namika's work is driven by her fascination with the different melting points between "clay + glaze”. This unique perspective and interpretation of this technical study results in original and contemporary expressions in ceramics.
By assembling thin, hand-built walls, building up high or wide to stretch then outline and then reforming during the drying process she creates dynamic 3D forms.
In the balance of control and experimentation with the formulas of her glazes, she allows for different phenomenon to occur - cracking, melting and wrapping – and these outcomes are framed as ambivalent beauty of strength in delicacy and fragility, masterly infusing the traditional and contemporary.
After a year of planning this show with the incredible Namika Nakai, her first solo show in Oceania, we are thrilled to present her singular and collectable works at Public Record.
