Trantham Gordon is an artist currently based in Tamaki Makaurau. He explores
the intersection between the form and function of art-objects through a
multidisciplinary practice. While Trantham's methodical process-based art
practice concentrates on precision and accuracy, he embraces the
inconsistencies of human touch and unpredictable material surfaces.
Each handcrafted Ceramic Chess Set contains over one hundred individual
ceramic structures. Designed with dual intention, these works are able to be
displayed on a wall and handled for a game of chess.
Trantham's hand-built tiles form one-off stoneware boards, set in a ceramic or rimu frame. The thirty two chess pieces are simplistic and brutalist in design. Their robust yet delicate materiality brings attention to the relationship between action and art-object.
Trantham graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Toi Rauwharangi College
of Creative Arts, Massey University, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington in 2021. Hisbroader art practice includes ceramic painting, line drawing, moving image and time-based media.
